Here are some simple dog training tips for a well-behaved, enjoyable walk:
Start with proper equipment. Use a well-fitted harness or collar and a standard 4–6 foot leash. Retractable leashes are not ideal for training because they can encourage pulling.
Teach loose-leash walking. If your dog begins to pull, stop walking. Only continue once the leash is relaxed. This teaches your dog that pulling does not move them forward.
Reward good behavior. Bring small treats and praise your dog when they walk calmly beside you or check in with you. Positive reinforcement helps your dog understand what you expect.
Practice basic commands. Work on cues like “sit,” “stay,” “leave it,” and “heel” at home or in quiet areas before practicing in busier environments.
Be consistent. Use the same commands and expectations each walk. Consistency helps your dog learn faster and reduces confusion.
Allow sniff breaks. Sniffing is mentally stimulating for dogs and can make walks more satisfying while still maintaining structure.
With patience and regular practice, walks can become calm, structured, and enjoyable for both you and your dog.
